There was a fantastic article recently published in the WSJ called “Break the Competency Curse”. Here is the link:

This article explains how powerful Career Coaching can be to both an individual employee and an entire organization. In this particular situation there was a manager who was very good at her task. So much so, that she received internal rewards and accolades for performing her duties at a high level and was well respected within her company. Trouble is she kept getting the exact same assignments. Sound familiar? You’re good at what you do so we will ask you to do it over and over again. This can lead to feelings of being trapped and pigeonholed into a specific role with a sense of hopelessness. These negative feelings can have a profound impact on your energy levels and easily spill over into multiple areas of your life outside of work.
Many people (the subject of this article included) would begin to look around outside of their current company for alternatives. It’s common to develop a kind of “up or out” mentality that could potentially be a misstep in your career not to mention costly for an organization to replace and retrain a management level employee. Career Coaching was the difference maker for this particular person, her organization and I’d go as far as to say it changed her entire career path.
Are you in a similar situation? Have you looked at all of the possible outcomes? Weighed the pros and cons of your decisions? Why not try reframing your situation in a more positive light? Flip the dynamic. Sure, you’re good at your particular role but you’re so much more than that! How do the skills you’ve developed and honed in your current position translate to other opportunities within the organization? Are you bringing all of your skills to the table? How can you express yourself positively and in a non threatening manner to get your point across that you’re looking to expand your potential? What are the best channels to go through to voice your desired goals and objectives and how do they align with the values of your organization? What is the most compelling way to package your proposal and to sell it to the influencers and decision makers that can really make a difference in your career?
If you find yourself asking any of the above questions then we can help. Career Coaching is a partnership and together we can accomplish your goals and objectives. These are the types of things that have the potential to propel you to new heights in your career and in your life.
